According to UNICEF, more than 855,000 children remain out of school in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon as a result of the conflict pitting the government of Cameroon and armed Separatists in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. Since 2016, when a teachers' and lawyers' strike action degenerated into an armed conflict, more than 80% of schools have been shut down and at least 74 schools destroyed still according to UNICEF. Hundreds of thousands of children have fled with their families to the other safer parts of Cameroon as Internally Displaced Persons with over thirty thousand as refugees in neighboring Nigeria. There have been threats to life and kidnappings of teachers and learners attributed to the armed separatists, as well as the burning of entire villages mostly attributed to government forces. This environment has made it not safe for children to acquire knowledge in a calm and safe manner.

Another school year will be coming up in September 2020 and there is every indication the situation will remain the same given the fact that fierce fighting still rages on between the warring factions. Your voices can help stop the targeting of schools, learners and teachers, as a definitive solution to the conflict is being awaited.
