Expel White Supremacist From UNF
Expel White Supremacist From UNF
On March 29th, a UNF professor announced to their class that the university had discovered QR codes connected to white supremacist websites on campus. The anti-Semitic propaganda had been spread around campus during the Jewish holiday of Passover. The University of North Florida failed to release an official statement and failed to notify UNF students for eight days.
It wasn’t until April 6th that the UNF administration sent an email headed “Racially Biased Incident on Campus.” UNF determined that the student was not a threat, and then referred the white supremacist to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Inclusion, without stating if they were to be expelled or not.
Having failed to denounce the guilty party, on April 14th, the white supremacist took the opportunity to out himself publicly at the UNF Interfaith Center’s “Coffee and Conversation: Antisemitism” virtual event. During this event, the white supremacist made himself known as the creator of this propaganda and then stated that he was “tired of hearing that being white is bad.” The white supremacist was not kicked out of the Zoom event, nor condemned by UNF administrators at any time.
On the day prior to this incident, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) hosted a rally against the presence of this Neo-Nazi propaganda on campus. Despite the number of students who expressed their outrage at the rally, the UNF administration did not provide the student population with adequate action for change. SDS has fought against white supremacists on campus since 2017. This is the third time in the past four years that there are comfortable white supremacists on campus willing to defend their cause by plastering their propaganda on campus and outing themselves freely. By not taking accountability for the presence of white supremacists on campus, UNF administration is complicit in the issue.
UNF’s repeated lack of action regarding the presence of white supremacists on campus speaks volumes, because it implies that they are neutral on the issue. This student should not have felt comfortable to out himself so easily. We must make it clear that we, as the student body, will not tolerate the presence of white supremacy on campus. UNF has a major issue with transparency and presenting solutions to these dangerous occurrences on campus.
UNF SDS demands full accountability from UNF. We demand that the University takes transparent action in holding this self-proclaimed Nazi accountable by expulsing and banning him from campus for the safety of all of the students and staff. We demand that UNF takes action against white supremacy instead of giving it a platform and to stop allowing students and faculty to live in fear and insecurity instead of standing up for those who make this campus worthwhile.
Support students and condemn white supremacy at UNF by signing this petition. Place the UNF administration accountable for their repeated lack of action. SDS says NO to white supremacists on campus!
Students for a Democratic Society demands the following:
1) Expel the Neo-Nazi student.
2) Implement real safety protocols to eliminate white supremacy on campus.
3) Structural departmental change with actual Safe Space methods focused on centering the voices of People of Color, especially students.
4) Immediate transparency. This includes specific rhetoric including details such as dates and specifying what was discovered.
