What would you do if the German government in the 21st century included the school that educated Nazi war criminals in the UNESCO World Heritage List as a proud heritage of German history? What would you do if a teacher that taught Nazi war criminals is falsified as a great teacher and publicized to the world?

A Japanese educational institution that taught students to invade neighboring countries has become and known to the world as a proud World Heritage Site.

Shokasonjuku Academy, a private academy led by Yoshida Shoin, is a place where Japanese national leaders who launched Meiji Restoration were nurtured, and is a place where the idea of imperialist war of aggression was conceived.

In 2015, the Japanese government registered Meiji modern industrial facilities including Shokasonjuku Academy into UNESCO World Heritage List.

In Japan, Yoshida Shoin(1830-1859) who led Shokasonjuku Academy is deemed as a hero that formed the proud Meiji era, but to the people that suffered from Imperialist Japan's aggression, he is regarded as a teacher who raised war criminals.

<Main messages of Yoshida Shoin's letters to his pupils>

"By invading and controlling Joseon, Manchuria, and China, which are prone to invasion, Japan should be compensated with the land of Joseon and Manchuria for what Japan had lost through trade with Russia."

"Western powers will retreat by themselves if Japan shows a dignified and progressive momentum by making many worships and conquering Hokkaido to the north and Joseon to the west."

"If Japan were to occupy Joseon and Manchuria, Ulleungdo must be used as the first stepping stone."

Pupils who followed Yoshida Shoin such as Ito Hirobumi, the 1st Resident General of Japanese Residents-General of Korea, later spearheaded the invasion of the Korean peninsula.

Back then, Japan claimed that it did not colonize Joseon to invade Joseon, but colonized Joseon to defend Japan from the threat of Joseon.

Japan also rationalized that the First Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895) and Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) were also meant to protect Japan from the Qing Dynasty and Russia, hiding the fact that those wars were for Japan's imperial ambitions.

Eventually, Japan won both wars and gained dominance on the Korean peninsula, and by plundering resources of Asia, Japan accumulated enormous wealth and invested in its munitions industry, subsequently causing World War Ⅱ.

Yoshida Shoin and his pupils destroyed peace in Asia and because of them, horrific war crimes, the tragedies in human history, occurred.

However, after hiding historical facts of all this, the Japanese government registered Shokasonjuku Academy as a UNESCO World Heritage in 2015.

If the Japanese government had genuinely reflected on its past imperialist wars of aggression and considered the people and countries that suffered from Japanese war of aggression, Japan would not have listed Shokasonjuku as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which raised the war criminals who started the imperialist war of aggression.

Shokasonjuku Academy should not be falsified nor known to the international community as a proud UNESCO World Heritage Site

Above all, the reason the Japanese government registered Shokasonjuku Academy on the UNESCO World Heritage List is to whitewash the atrocities of Japanese imperialist war of aggression and its image as a country that committed war crimes in the World War Ⅱ.

Therefore, we urge UNESCO to implement the following requirements

• We urge UNESCO to thoroughly scrutinize Shokasonjuku Academy whether or not it conforms to the peace pursued by UNESCO.
• We demand UNESCO to confirm that Shokashonjuku Academy is an educational institution that conceived the idea of imperialist war of aggression.
• We request UNESCO to put pressure on the Japanese government to take steps to faithfully convey the overall history of Shokasonjuku Academy.

침략을 가르친 학교가 자랑스러운 유네스코 세계유산?

여러분은 21세기 독일정부가 과거 나치 전범을 교육시킨 학교를 독일 역사 속 자랑스러운 유산으로 유네스코 세계유산에 등재시킨다면 어쩌실 건가요? 나치 전범을 가르친 교사가 위대한 스승으로 포장되어 전 세계에 홍보된다면 어쩌실 건가요?

이웃나라를 침략하도록 가르친 일본의 교육기관이 지금 자랑스러운 세계문화유산이 되어 전 세계에 알려지고 있습니다.

‘쇼카손주쿠(松下村塾)’는 요시다 쇼인이 이끈 사설학당으로, 메이지 유신을 일으킨 일본 국가지도자들을 양성한 곳이며, 제국주의 침략전쟁 사상이 잉태된 장소입니다.

2015년 일본 정부는 쇼카손주쿠를 포함한 ‘메이지 일본의 산업혁명유산’을 유네스코 세계유산에 등재시켰습니다.

쇼카손주쿠를 이끈 요시다 쇼인(1830-1859)은 일본에서 자랑스러운 메이지 시대를 만든 영웅으로 평가되지만, 일본 제국주의 침략으로 고통 받은 나라의 국민들에게는 전범을 키워낸 스승으로 여겨집니다.

<요시다 쇼인이 제자들에게 보낸 편지의 주요 내용>

"침략하기 쉬운 조선, 만주, 중국을 침략해서 지배함으로서, 일본이 러시아에게 교역으로 빼앗긴 부분을 조선 땅과 만주 땅으로 보상받아야 한다."

"군함을 많이 만들어 북쪽으로 북해도를, 서쪽으로 조선을 정복하여 당당하게 진취적인 기세를 보여준다면 서양열강들은 스스로 물러날 것이다."

"조선과 만주를 차지하려면 울릉도를 첫 발판으로 삼아야 한다."

조선총독부 초대 통감을 지낸 이토 히로부미 등 요시다 쇼인의 가르침을 받은 제자들은 훗날 한반도 침략의 선봉으로 나섰습니다.

당시 일본은 조선을 침략하기 위해 식민지배 한 것이 아니라 조선의 위협으로부터 일본을 방어하기 위하여 조선을 식민지배 한 것이라고 주장했습니다.

또한 청일전쟁(1894-1895)과 러일전쟁(1904-1905)도 일본의 제국주의 야망을 위한 전쟁이라는 사실을 숨기고 청나라와 러시아로부터 일본을 지키기 위해서였다고 합리화했습니다.

결국 일본은 청일전쟁과 러일전쟁에서 승리해 한반도에 대한 주도권을 쟁취했으며, 아시아의 자원을 수탈하여 막대한 부를 쌓아 군수산업에 투자하여 이후에 제2차 세계대전을 일으켰습니다.

요시다 쇼인과 그의 가르침을 받은 제자들은 아시아의 평화를 무너뜨렸고, 그들로 인해 인류 역사의 비극인 끔찍한 전쟁범죄가 발생했습니다.

하지만 일본 정부는 이런 역사적 사실을 숨기고 2015년에 쇼카손주쿠를 유네스코 세계유산에 등재시켰습니다.

만약 일본 정부가 과거 제국주의 침략전쟁에 대한 진정한 반성을 하고 일본의 침략으로부터 고통 받은 나라의 국민들을 배려했다면 제국주의 침략전쟁을 일으킨 전범을 키운 쇼카손주쿠를 유네스코 세계유산에 등재시키지 않았을 것입니다.

쇼카손주쿠가 자랑스러운 유네스코 세계유산으로 포장되어 국제사회에 알려져서는 안 됩니다.

무엇보다 일본 정부가 쇼카손주쿠를 유네스코 세계유산에 등재시킨 이유는 일본 제국주의 침략전쟁의 만행과 2차 세계대전 전범국가로서의 이미지를 세탁하기 위해서입니다.

따라서 우리는 유네스코에 아래의 요구사항을 이행할 것을 촉구합니다.

• 우리는 쇼카손주쿠가 유네스코가 추구하는 평화에 부합하는지 철저히 조사 할 것을 요구합니다.
• 우리는 쇼카손주쿠가 제국주의 침략전쟁 사상을 잉태한 교육기관임을 유네스코가 확인할 것을 요구합니다.
• 우리는 일본 정부가 쇼카손주쿠에 관한 전반적인 역사를 충실히 전달할 수 있는 조치를 취하도록 유네스코가 일본 정부를 압박하길 요구합니다.
