Relocate the money from the third rec center to build more parking at UNCC.

UNCC is allocating $63,500,000 to building a third rec center on campus. It will contain an indoor pool, multi-purpose courts, group fitness studios, a cycling studio, an elevated running/walking track, fitness space including cardio and strength training equipment. All of these are in Belk Gym, with the elevated track in the SAC in Halton Arena. They are building this over lot 19, which is very close to the center of campus, and we will lose 271 parking spaces for it.
Parking spaces near the center of campus are in extremely high demand during peak class hours, which are between 9:30 am and 2:00 pm. Many decks and lots have no open spaces during these times. Further lots are available during these times, but is a long walk, and often, the available parking spaces are on the higher floors, which take time to drive up to.
A parking space in a deck costs between $12,000-$14,000. With $63,500,000, 4535 parking spaces in decks (at $14,000) could be built, and 271 spots would not be lost to the rec center. At $12,000, 5291 parking spaces could be built in decks. That equals over 4 decks the size of South Deck, which may not be necessary. The money left over from building even 2 or 3 decks that size could be used to lower parking permit prices, as $450 is one of the highest prices for a commuter permit in North Carolina.
UNCC is a continually growing school, and more students will need more parking. There is space behind Track & Athletic Field 1 towards Alumni Way, as well as between the Student Union and Lot 20, for some larger decks around the size of South Deck. For smaller decks, there is space between Belk Hall and the Student Union, as well as behind Cone Deck towards Moore Hall and Levine Hall.
Students have tweeted about the competition of parking on campus, and we want more and better parking!
