End the Attack on the UNC Center for Civil Rights.
This petition had 710 supporters
The UNC Board of Governors is considering a proposal that would prohibit centers and institutes affiliated with the University from engaging in legal representation or litigating on behalf of clients. This proposal targets the UNC Center for Civil Rights, which has done innovative and impactful work with poor communities of color across North Carolina to help them obtain basic infrastructure, equal access to education, environmental justice, adequate housing, and greater civic engagement and political participation. This proposal, by prohibiting the Center for Civil Rights from litigating, would effectively end their work.
This attack on the UNC Center for Civil Rights must be stopped. If you believe that the University of North Carolina has a role to play in addressing civil rights and ending racial inequity as part of its mission of public service to all the people of North Carolina, that legal representation is an essential tool for lawyers engaged in public service, or that the Board of Governors should refuse to impose a narrowly partisan agenda on the University, then sign this petition and share it to show your support.
We ask the BOG to preserve the University’s long tradition of public service to all North Carolinians by rejecting the proposal to keep the Center for Civil Rights from engaging in legal representation and litigation.
