Remove Australia from the Security Council unless IMMEDIATE action is taken to comply with international law

We call for the UN to take action to enforce its own orders relating to the illegal indefinite detention of refugees*, by removing Australia from the Security Council unless IMMEDIATE action is taken by the Australian government to adhere to international law and the orders of the UN, by releasing and compensating the affected persons, and legislating to ensure that effective judicial remedies are put in place to prevent cases of illegal detention in the future.
The criteria set out in the UNSC’s own Provisional Rules of Procedure states “The Security Council shall decide whether in its judgement the applicant is a peace-loving State and is able and willing to carry out the obligations contained in the Charter”
Australia has REPEATEDLY shown through its immigration policies that it is in clear breach of these requirements, and that it is unwilling to meet its obligations as a member of the UN.
Strong and swift action MUST be taken against the Australian Government over the continued human rights abuses that it commits, in order to end its prolonged and escalating campaign of brutality against the world’s most vulnerable people.
This inhumanity must be stopped.
