Derek Paley started this petition to UMD faculty

Many troubling allegations have been reported in the Washington Post regarding unacceptable treatment of UMD football players:

  • President Loh was notified anonymously by the parent of a student-athlete in 2016, regarding abusive behavior in the football program
  • Coaches poured snacks and Rice Krispie treats over a player to shame him
  • Coaches filmed players vomiting from workouts to humiliate them
  • Coach Durkin referred (possibly in jest) to injured players as a “waste of life”
  • Well-regarded players received “bags of gear, great food, and massages”, whereas others were fed hot dogs and beans.
  • "During meals and in the training room, players were shown graphic videos featuring loud music, violent imagery and animals killing each other. The videos were intended to motivate the players.”
  • Coach Durkin is the 2nd highest paid employee in the state of Maryland

The university and state should reward faculty and staff in proportion to their positive impact on campus. The mistreatment of student athletes is unacceptable and does not reflect the values of the University of Maryland.
