Kristy Wiggans started this petition to UKVI and the British Government

International students who are already in the UK and unable to return home due to COVID-19 have been excluded from the UKVI Tier 4 visa amendment stipulations. Currently anyone in the UK who has completed their first year of postgraduate study (Masters or MPhil) and would like to progress to PhD study is required to return to their home country to apply for a new visa to continue their studies. A process that will take minimum 12 weeks in most cases. The UKVI have allowed “in UK” applications for those whose visas expire before and up to 31 July. This excludes a significant number of students who need a new visa in order to continue their studies in September, and whose visa may not necessarily expire before then due to the grace period allowed on many visas in case of delayed submission etc.

UKVI and the government are putting these student’s futures at risk by not allowing those who require a new visa this year in order to continue their studies, regardless of the end date of their current visa, to apply from within the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic. If these students cannot apply now for a new visa they will not be able to continue their studies. They will lose their PhD prospects and their futures will be in jeopardy as there is simply not enough time to guarantee a visa approval ahead of September- even if international travel was an easy option currently, and even if many countries borders were not remaining closed to international travellers. Many of these students are training to be the doctors, chemists and biologists of the future. The very people who have been working so hard through this pandemic to save lives.

Please take a moment to sign this petition, so that the thousands of students who are currently in the UK, many of whom have had no financial support during this time, and who are waiting anxiously in the hope that there is a further amendment to the visa stipulations before it is too late, can have the chance to progress to further study and apply for their visas from within the UK without restriction of the end date of their current visa.
