Why this petition matters

Started by Jon Cloke

It will amaze most UK residents to understand that the seabeds around the UK out to 12 miles belong to The Crown - not the people of the UK.

This means that ANY activity, from preserving ecosystems of Kelp and Seagrass, to offshore wave energy activities, can only take place if the Crown estate is paid a licence fee, with their approval.

In 2021 the Crown estate made £121 million from marine revenues from sources including offshore wave project activity - the future of renewable energy in the UK relies to some extent on paying substantial fees to the Crown estate under an antiquated historical right reaching back to 1066.

The Crown estate does nothing to justify these fees. They are a drawback to environmental projects and energy alike, allowing the Crown to feed on the desires of UK citizens for a cleaner environment and clean energy.

This petition:

1) Calls on Parliament to terminate Crown estate legal domination of UK Seabeds

2) Calls on Parliament to redirect legal ownership of UK Seabeds to the UK government and seabed licencing and activities to be run by a taxpayer-controlled public committee

3) Calls on the new Seabed Committee to direct future licence fees into a Green Wealth Fund, owned by the British people and set up to promote investment into the mitigation of climate change
