Big Blue Ocean Cleanup started this petition to UK Parliament

Bottom trawling must be banned immediately as it’s destroying our oceans.

Fishing boats that trawl the ocean floor release as much carbon dioxide as the entire aviation industry while destroying vital marine habitats, coral, oyster beds and sponges.

This is a crisis for our oceans. We need a complete ban on bottom trawling right away – the practice of dropping fishing nets with heavy weights onto the ocean floor is disastrous for our blue planet.

Shocking research in the journal Nature, conducted by 26 marine biologists and climate experts, has revealed that the carbon emissions released from ancient sea-bed stores into ocean waters from bottom trawling fisheries reach a billion tonnes every year – 47.7 million tonnes of which comes from trawling in UK waters.

We cannot afford for our governments to wash their hands of the urgent decisions needed to protect the planet, the authorities must confront the industrial emitters, and as consumers, we should avoid industrially harvested or farmed fish.

By acting now we can prevent seabed ecosystems becoming an empty lifeless wasteland.

We are asking George Eustice, the environment secretary, to completely ban bottom trawling. By doing so we will protect vulnerable wildlife whose populations are in a state of collapse, and will ensure these habitats have a chance of thriving once again.

We urge everyone who cares about the oceans to sign our petition to call for a complete bottom trawling ban in the UK, and for the government to negotiate a global ban.
