Every day, a family is torn apart, a life is ruined, and a friendship abruptly ended due to the devastating effects of Work related stress and anxiety on peoples' wellbeing & happiness. In 2018/19 stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 44% of all work-related ill health cases and 54% of all working days lost due to ill health.

According to MIND, 1 in 4 people experience a mental health problem while only 1 in 6 will seek help. Pre-Pandemic, it was reported that £8bn was lost yearly due to Absenteeism, while about £26bn was lost due to Presenteeism. These figures paint an appalling picture. So, why aren't organisations and businesses doing more for their employees wellbeing at work? Why isn't the Government making them?

Wellbeing at work isn't a one size fits all. A Holistic approach is needed to cover key aspects: Physical, Emotional, Financial and Mental / Psychological needs; which address learning new / refreshing skills, building relationships, motivational, inspiring and rejuvenating experiences, that help create a symbiotic work-life balance rather than the dual personalities workers are forced to adopt. 

My name is Valentina Hynes. Together with my husband, Stephen, we specialise in Holistic Wellbeing & Happiness at Work. In the course of our research and interactions with organisations and individuals, we have come to realise a glaring chasm of Government mandated direction for businesses and organisations to provide for the Wellbeing & Happiness of their employees, besides the all encompassing "Duty `of Care" which employers interpret to their liking. This chasm or oversight empowers employers to do the barest minimum in protecting their employees wellbeing and happiness

As we navigate our way through this pandemic, the toll on our collective Wellbeing would be devastating. Now more than ever, The Government needs to ensure that organisations and businesses are taking care of their people's Wellbeing using a preventive approach. This is the only way we can all bounce back after the Tsunami that is COVID-19.

CALL TO ACTION:

Together, we can ensure that the workplace stops being a trigger for the devastating effects of stress and anxiety, by uniting to get Parliament to sign into law, a compulsory holistic Wellbeing directive for organisations and businesses.

Should we win this battle, suicide rates, depression and all the other horrible effects of stress and anxiety caused by work will be substantially reduced. Happiness levels will go up and so will work engagement and productivity.
