Angie Moore started this petition to UK Parliament

I am petitioning for tougher sentences to be imposed on people found guilty of drink driving fatalities.
Drink driving fatalities have not decreased despite increased in awareness around rules.

Some statistics are shown below:

In 2016 between 220 and 250 people were killed in drink-drive accidents, with a central estimate of 230 fatalities

the increase in drink-drive fatalities since 2015 is not statistically significant, continuing a period of stability recorded since 2010
an estimated 9,040 people were killed or injured in drink-drive accidents, a rise of 7% since 2015

the total number of drink-drive accidents rose by 6% to 6,070 in 2016

It is irrefutable to deny the facts above. Despite the increased funding put into the education of motorists via the Department for Transport's road safety agency, THINK! , it is unfortunate that this still is an issue that continuously impacts the nation.

With the increased accessibility to public transport, where you can order a cab via an app on your mobile phone, the far fetched excuses that people seem to have for driving whilst over under the influence are no longer acceptable.

For this reason it is now time to call for tougher sentences on drink driving.

Current guidelines:

What must be taken into account when we talk about sentencing, the guidelines only advise of the maximum sentence that can be received by the accused. This means if the max sentence is 14 years, then the judge can award anything up to 14 years.

Causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink or drugs

This offence is tried in the Crown Court. The maximum penalty is a prison sentence of 14 years and/or an unlimited fine. Anyone convicted of this offence must be disqualified from driving for a minimum of two years (or three years if there is a related previous conviction), unless there are special reasons to impose a shorter disqualification or no disqualification. They must pass an extended driving test to regain a full driving licence. If the driver is not disqualified, their licence may be endorsed with between three and 11 penalty points.

Serious injury by dangerous driving

. The offence is tried in a Crown Court or Magistrates' Court. If heard in a Crown Court, the maximum sentence is five years' imprisonment and/or a fine. If heard in a Magistrates' Court the maximum sentence is six months imprisonment and/or a fine. In both courts, there will also be a mandatory two-year minimum period of disqualification and endorsement. An extended retest is also required.

In summary, if the victim is seriously impaired ie) brain damaged due to the accusers injurying a victim by being over the legal drink driving limit, then the MAXIMUM sentence is 5 years!! A victims life long disability is accountable for a max of 5 years imprisonments! And that’s without the ‘good behaviour’ conditions which means earlier release!
For a victims death, again a MAXIMUM of 14 years? And again this is without the good behaviour which may result in earlier release.

How many of us have read article after article in the media regarding loss of life for innocent bystanders and the outrage we have felt that the accused do not get tougher sentences?

On 15 October 2017, the Ministry of Justice announced plans for killer drivers to face life behind bars, following successful campaigning from Brake on behalf of road crash victims. Life sentences are to be introduced for those who cause death by dangerous driving or cause death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs, and a new offence of causing serious injury by careless driving will be created.
We are still awaiting those tougher sentences to be implemented.

Its time to get the government to focus on keeping the promises made in 2017 and get this back on the table. It’s an urgent matter and unfortunately not one that will go away without tougher sentences.

I propose that we get the uplift prison time to the one that has already been spoken below mentioned on the .gov website:

Life  sentences will be introduced for those who cause death by dangerous driving, and for careless drivers who kill while under the influence of drink or drugs

new offence of causing serious injury through careless driving to be created
part of government action to make roads safer for all and stop devastation caused by dangerous drivers and cyclist

lets get the ball rolling and sign this petition.

On a personal note

On a personal note, I thank you for reading this petition. I would loved to have gone into my experience with the above and how it impacts but due to pending legal matters, I am not to as yet able to yet.
Please sign this petition so we can get justice for people who have been deeply effected for drink driving .
