Only those who are 75 or 75+ on Pension Credit will get a free licence. The  others will lose their free licence and some will find it difficult to balance the budget if they wish to keep their TV. Many of these have to make decisions on a day by day basis as to whether they eat or heat the room.  A number of these are housebound, as we provide more care in the community, and rely on the TV as their main companion. This is because they may have carers visiting up to 4 times a day, 2-3 hours in total, and with their close family all working or studying they are left alone with the TV. Hence they will become lonely and isolated which will lead to Mental Health problems.

During Covid-19 we are beginning to see evidence of this as those on furlough return to work and community projects, which were a great support to elders, are finding it difficult to find volunteers to keep supporting people. This may get even worse after the Covid-19 pandemic goes away and the economic disaster hits.

We owe our elders a massive thank you for the way in which our communities and country have developed. Is it asking too much for the Government to ensure that they all have a free TV licence as they struggle with the problems of old age?
