Kenny Holmes started this petition to UK Parliament and

Our single use mindset to products has given us a vast array of disposable products and packaging. This effect on our environment is affecting countless lives of people across the world and our future descendants. In particular where plastics are involved, micro plastics are present in our world at ever increasing levels. This includes amounts that are building up in our food chain. The levels build up in our food sources and our own bodies, which will cause increasing issues as this process continues.

I would like to introduce a tax per tonne on any disposable product or packaging, with there being a higher rate of that tax per tonne of single use plastics items or packaging. This would be applied to manufacturers or importers, who would have to report their usage like businesses currently do with their carbon emissions.

It is difficult to ban certain products or packaging. There will always be individual cases where we need a certain type of packaging or we really can't do without a disposable item. those few times when it cannot be avoided should be a minority. We need to create an incentive to drive us towards better habits. I feel the best way to do this is to introduce a financial incentive.

Consumers have a difficult time trying to make environmentally friendly choices. Products with a low environmental impact are not necessarily available on the supermarket shelves. Retails often cite that they are simply providing what their customers want.

Retailers are also reluctant to move towards move environmentally friendly packaging because in many cases it would create expense for them. They would be less competitive. The solution is to create a situation whereby finding a more environmentally friendly solution gives them a financial benefit.

Introducing a financial incentive like the one I suggest would give manufacturers the incentive to look for ways to solve the problem for us. Any who can come up with solutions would be able to reduce their payments of this kind of tax and increase their profits.

The tax could be small at first to allow manufacturers time to adapt without putting their business practises at risk.

A good example of how well a financial incentive works to remove unnecessary packaging would be the 5p charge on carrier bags in shops. This charge removed the bulk of new plastic bags used almost over night. And how many people can say this has really affected their lives?

Adding this same kind of change, but to all products at the manufacturer level will allow for many small and subtle changes in our products that will in total make a significant change to our use of disposable items and plastics.
