Today I should have been in labour but instead I am trying to change a system that let me and so many other women and babies down. The following changes can prevent pregnancy loss, medical and mental health complications, as well as actually treating women as human beings.

My blog is here if you wish to know more details and why these changes should be implemented: https://medium.com/shout-in-the-dark/a-miscarriage-of-law-30d63ff3ac4e

  • All hospitals to offer counselling and signpost women who have experienced a pregnancy/baby loss to charities who can help, as well as the possibility of a funeral/service.
  • Statutory bereavement leave for any parent experiencing pregnancy loss over 5 weeks *
  • Option to take Statutory maternity pay & leave for parents whose baby is still-born after 13 weeks (currently it is 24 weeks).
  • All pregnancy-loss absence to still be a protected characteristic under pregnancy related absence until all pregnancy-loss medical complications have been treated or 2 months following loss.
  • All NHS Staff to undergo training in language use and bereavement with a pregnancy loss charity.
  • All hospitals to provide/print a simple 'remembrance certificate' for parents of pregnancy losses in EPAU / Maternity.
  • Option to register the birth and death of a still-born from 16 weeks**
  • Weekend opening for at least one EPAU in a hospital trust/city.
  • Screened off waiting area if not a room (away from maternity & crying babies) for women awaiting news or surgery of a pregnancy loss.
  • All hospitals to offer a scan and surgical miscarriage to women experiencing a miscarriage within a week of their confirmatory scan***
  • Blood tests for Thyroid/Progesterone/APS (sticky blood) after 1 miscarriage (or family history) and the relevant medication offered.
  • Investigations after 2 miscarriages (not consecutive) starting with the simple blood tests above +
  • Progesterone offered to women experiencing early bleeding and miscarriage++
                                                                --------
*This is the current parental bereavement leave only just put into place after the death of a child not during pregnancy.
**Currently you are forced to do so after 25weeks, although some parents find it helps to have the certificate, but some are not able to deal with the bureaucracy.
***A missed miscarriage is when the baby has stopped developing. Sometimes women have to wait so long for surgery they opt for medical management which involves a 'natural' miscarriage at home with no support.
+Currently you only get investigations after 3 consecutive miscarriages. Studies have shown TSH should be below 2.5 for first two trimesters and has been linked to miscarriages.
++Including those with short luteal phases to help with implantation
