For several years the number of supply teachers has increased.  This is partly due to teacher shortages and the pressures of full-time teaching.

In order to work, supply teachers are required to use umbrella companies to be able to be employed by the teaching agencies so that they can work at a school/college.  However, it is the teaching agency who finds the teacher work in a school.

The teacher can either work daily, on a short term or long term contract; according to the needs of the school.  In return for a wage, the agency will also receive a fee.  The teacher uses the umbrella company to deal with their tax liabilities, deduct pension contributions and other relevant deductions, for this service the teacher pays a fee to the umbrella company.

There is no employment security with being a supply teacher, as we have seen since the start of the Covid-19 crisis, many schools dismissed their supply staff to avoid the cost.  The supply staff depended on the Govt job retention scheme however; we are now seeing the teaching agencies and umbrella companies refusing to furlough their staff. Thousands of staff are now living in poverty.  We ask for equal employment rights as employed teachers.
