Eritreans are dying as a result of the reckless and cruel policies of the Eritrean government.

The Eritrean government is internationally notorious for its North Korea style repression and the repressive controls it exercises over its people. The Eritrean government’s repression has been documented and condemned by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Eritrea in a series of reports that are well known to the British government.

This repression has now targeted the Catholic Church, forcibly closing 30 hospitals and clinics that the church ran for the benefit of the people. These medical institutions are located across the country and are – often – the only safety net available to poor and vulnerable people in rural and urban areas. These medical institutions have always offered help and served Eritreans irrespective of their ethnicity or their religious beliefs. They have been genuinely lifesaving.

These closures happened abruptly, without any prior planning or dialogue with the Church. Military personnel arrived at the clinics and hospitals and ordered gravely sick patients and medical staff to go home. Patients and bystanders have reported that some patients had their oxygen removed from them. One woman, in labour, arrived at her local clinic only to find that it had been closed. She died at the site having been deprived of medical care. Fortunately, her new-born baby survived. The ambulance that would normally be dispatched to emergencies such as hers has also been confiscated.  This is a single example we have evidence of; it is certain to be being replicated across the country.

This is by no means the first attack on religious organisations by the Eritrean government. Both Christians and Muslims have been targeted. These developments have included the arbitrary arrests and persecution of different Christian denominations, the closure of faith-based schools and the house arrest and persecution of religious leaders. We are angered and alarmed by these irresponsible, inhumane and draconian steps taken by the Eritrean government.

Eritrea has been turned into an open-air prison. We urge the British Government to increase its scrutiny of and pressure on the Eritrean government to stop the pervasive and draconian crimes being inflicted on Eritrean people. We call for the release of all political prisoners and prisoners of conscience, the end of the persecution of religious groups and the end of indefinite military service.

Thanking you in anticipation. Yours truly
