Extend the time widowed parents claim Bereavement Support Payment for up to ten years

Changes to bereavement benefits mean widowed parents with children can now only receive payments for up to 18 months, compared to WPA that was paid until a child left full-time education. This petition believes the payment period should be extended to up to 10 years to provide financial security to bereaved families.

When I was 11 years old, my father died from a brain tumour. That's me on the right in this photo, with the curly hair and cheesy grin, and my twin sister next to me.

In less than a year from diagnosis, we became a family of three, rather than four. This situation, losing the main breadwinner in a family, isn't unique. It's something which hundreds of families go through every year. The replacement of the Widowed Parent's Allowance with Bereavement Support Payments means widowed parents will only be able to receive the benefit for 18 months after their partner's death, instead of until their children turn 20 or leave full time education.

When a child loses a parent, it's a brutal and traumatic time. Limiting how long a spouse or partner will be able to receive their Bereavement Support Payments for can put pressure on them to return to work before they have come to terms with the devastating impact of losing a husband or wife, and a parent to their children.

What do we want instead? We want to extend the time widowed parents can claim Bereavement Support Payment to up to to 10 years. This will give families the financial security they need to be able to adjust to live without their mother, father, husband or wife.
