Charlotte Bulmer started this petition to UK Parliament

I graduated from UCLAN Preston in Dec 2015. Since graduating I have only managed to gain temp employment (busy periods, covering) within a few scientific companys and aside from a few months here and there, I am constantly being turned down due to “lack of experience” even though at uni, the forensic degree I completed included a large amount of work including a wide range of scientific techniques for 3 years but this means nothing to potential employers and I’m finding it impossible to get my foot in the door. I accept it’s a tough field to break into so I have been applying for anything I can in order to get by. Now it doesn’t matter how far I get through the application process, whether I score high in application tests or whether or not I have a very successful interview, I ALWAYS get refused employment and when I ask for feedback (which I always do) I constantly get told that I’m “over qualified”.

Ok.....so wait a minute....the fact that I got up off my arse and achieved an impressive collection of qualifications in my life means that I now have to sit in “unemployment land”????

People serve time behind bars for vile crimes and they have a better chance than someone like me of getting employment once they are released!

How is this fair? I owe £48k in student debt, I lost my mind, my personality, sleep, friends, I made myself ill completing my degree, I came out a different person all whilst single handedly bringing up my baby daughter for what?!!? To be told I’m “over qualified” (for any job) or “under experienced” for anything forensic science related!!

Please help me change this....it’s not fair to educationally discriminate anyone... I take my hat off to anyone who has completed a degree and until you can get your foot in whatever door you are trying to metaphorically break through, you deserve the right to employment and shouldn’t be refused due to the fact you have achieved so much. Surely if someone has studied and completed a degree that’s a good thing....right?

I am really really struggling at the moment to see the light....I just want a career for me and my baby girl for our future but I can literally paper my house in rejection letters and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM. Says unsuccessful due to being “over qualified” (any general job application) or “under experienced” (any forensic application).

I don’t know what to do I feel lost and stuck. Please please sign and help to stop this madness! I want employers to stop using “over qualified” as a reason to turn down candidates, I want this to be classed as discrimination because it is discrimination and it’s wrong!! I can get my head around being under experienced (as frustrating as it is as. How is anyone supposed to get experience if no one will give the experience??)  but not for being over qualified!!! If I can’t get into a forensic job and every other company says over qualified what am I supposed to do?!

It feels as though I’m being punished for studying and even though I’m immensely proud of myself for what I have achieved I feel let down and lost..... help me stop this madness.
