Save Vinovium House, Bishop Auckland DWP office

This petition had 285 supporters

To the House of Commons.
The petition of residents of the UK.
Declares that the proposed closure of the Department for Work and Pensions offices at Vinovium House in Bishop Auckland will have a hugely negative impact on local jobs, public services and the economy of the area.
The petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Department for Work and Pensions to reconsider their proposal of office closure and to guarantee the long term future of jobs and services at Vinovium House in Bishop Auckland.

The proposed closure of Vinovium House in Bishop Auckland will result in up to 83 staff being forced out of the town. Bishop Auckland has suffered from repeated cuts to public sector jobs in recent years and this latest proposal will only serve to cut the money coming into Bishop Auckland and has suffered financially as a result. The proposal to close the office has been made without any consideration of the effect either on the workers, or on the local community. No alternative locations have been yet found for the staff to be moved into and there is a very real prospect no suitable office will be found within daily travel meaning that many of these staff could be forced out of work.

The announcement was made without any Equality Impact Assessment on the proposed closure having been carried out. This clearly shows that the motivation for the closure is purely on cost and not on the effect that this will have. The Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) and its members in Bishop Auckland, supported by the local MP Bishop Auckland MP and local Councillor Joy Allen, is calling for the proposed closure to be halted and for the site, its staff and their contribution to the town and its economy to be protected.
