Reinstatement of Free Instrumental Tuition in all State Schools
For many years I was a peripatetic woodwind teacher in state schools. These lessons were free, and were the only way the vast majority of my pupils could receive lessons on instruments. For many it was a new lease of life, and taught not only how to play the instrument but also life skills: listening; working with others; co-ordination; social contact; and in many cases was helpful in sorting out problems of relating with others through playing together. This was a personal introduction to music, and to the possibility of a life-time involvement with music: professionally, or as an amateur, or as a concert goer. Music involvement is not an option but an integral part of stable life. It is an enrichment and enjoyment which lasts throughout life. But only those with money can afford to have this choice. A full education is for all - not just for those who can afford it. Poorer children and often very talented children are thus deprived of what now seems to be seen as an unnecessary option and miss out. I have also seen the difference instrumental music tuition can make to children's health, happiness, well-being and adjustment, and as a preparation for life. The experience of instrumental tuition is NOT a luxury option. It should be a necessary part of choice within an education system of which we were once proud. Every person I have approached regarding this issue - of all nationalities and musical backgrounds - has agreed. It is about time something is done about it. If Latvia can do it - so can we.
