RACE AND CULTURAL AWARENESS EDUCATION TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN ALL SCHOOLS

RACE AND CULTURAL AWARENESS EDUCATION TO BE IMPLEMENTED IN ALL SCHOOLS
Why this petition matters
There is a significant lack of education currently within the UK regarding racial and cultural awareness.
Schools need to be teaching their pupils from a young age about racial and cultural discrimination, injustice and unconscious bias in our modern day society to ensure people are educated enough to put a stop to racism.
Whist the teaching of black history month is important, we need to be having regular conversations about race, about people’s past and current experiences and ultimately how we can help our black friends and family moving forward.
Whilst cities such as London and Leeds include more diverse communities, many smaller towns throughout the UK can be limited to almost only white British people and as a result there is a significant lack of education surrounding important racial and inequality matters. It is also important to remember that it is not our black community’s responsibility to educate others.
We need ALL schools within the UK to implement regular teaching on this topic as part of the national curriculum. We need to be encouraged to have regular conversations about race, even if some find them uncomfortable. We also need to be calling out those with harmful views.
Not being educated enough was never an excuse, but let’s educate anyway, in the name of Mr George Floyd and all else who have been affected and continue to be affected by racism and ignorance.
