Evan Harris started this petition to Ofcom and

Stop the Government, and its fawning allies in the corporate press, from bullying the BBC.

The BBC's Panorama programme has exposed failures by the Government in its handling of COVID-19. This is exactly the kind of public interest, investigative journalism that the media should be doing, and which most newspapers notably fail to do.

Whether or not you agree with everything it does, the BBC is by far the most trusted media institution in the country and has a world-wide reputation for impartiality, accuracy and editorial independence.

It is wholly unacceptable for the Culture Secretary to send a threatening letter to the BBC Director General on 1 May 2020 criticising their output. This deliberate attempt to undermine political independence and "chill" impartial reporting is the kind of tactics associated with authoritarian regimes, not healthy democracies.

The BBC is independently and effectively regulated - unlike the predominantly right wing newspapers who cheer on bullying politicians while proclaiming the virtue of "press freedom" for their editors and owners. Any complaint about breaches of BBC editorial standards will be handled fairly and transparently by Ofcom, who have the power to impose sanctions if necessary.

  • Please urge the Government to call off the bullies and concentrate on tackling the health and economic crisis we are all facing.
  • Both the BBC Board and Ofcom must stand up to these attempts at intimidation by the government and its allies in the press, whose newspapers command a fraction of the trust invested by the British public in the BBC.
