Protect the elderly and vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic and future pandemics
During the current coronavirus pandemic, we have all seen in the media and first hand the panic buying, often of basic items. In addition, shoppers not following government hygiene advice such as covering their mouth when coughing.
Elderly and other vulnerable groups may find it difficult to get out, and when they do, they will likely find that shelves have already been emptied, other shoppers are behaving irresponsibly by pushing and shoving, not respecting basic hygiene- therefore surfaces may be less safe to touch, and aisles may be much more difficult to navigate- particularly of concern to those with decreased mobility.
Follow the lead of shops such as Woolworth's in Australia by bringing in a legal requirement during this and any other pandemic, for supermarkets and other shops to reserve the first opening hour or two of each day for elderly and those also at risk.
If we are, as government tells us, most at risk if elderly or otherwise vulnerable, then making a safe shopping environment and reducing the risk of these groups going without the essentials by doing the above should be a requirement by law. Whether or not some supermarkets choose to do so of their own accord is immaterial- it should not be an option.
