Proof of Health Insurance for all foreign travellers visiting the United Kingdom

We are all aware of the current crisis in our NHS and the financial strain on its resources health tourism causes.  We've heard in the news recently about foreign travellers entering our country with the sole purpose of accessing our health system without paying for it. The NHS is falling hundreds of millions of pounds short in its ambition to claw back money lost through health tourism.  It's about time our Government woke up and addressed this problem.   Most UK citizens expect to pay for any healthcare which they may have to access when abroad on business/holiday trips so the majority of us take out travel/health insurance to cover for such eventualities before leaving the UK - why does our Government think it is okay for foreign travellers entering the UK not to have taken out such insurance?

The quickest and simplest way would be to tackle this at source by having an agreement similar to the Schengen Agreement, whereby foreign travellers to those countries who have signed up for the Agreement need to apply for a visa, prove they have sufficient means of support and proof of health insurance to cover their stay prior to the issuing of a visa.  If the UK put in place similar sanctions, surely this would prevent those foreign travellers who purposefully travel to our country with the sole intention of accessing our healthcare system and its treatments for free, from being able to do so.

Most of us living in the UK have worked hard and pay taxes which in part help fund the NHS.  At present, the NHS already treat those foreign travellers who require urgent care once in the UK as "immediate and necessary".  However, once an individual is allocated an NHS number, it can give them access to all the NHS services/treatments that UK citizens are entitled to.  It is very difficult to try and recoup payment from a foreign traveller once they are in a hospital bed!  The Government needs to act now to preserve our NHS.  The money amassed from these charges would enable the NHS to provide more beds, more doctors, more nurses, more paramedics and, in general, a better service for all.  Please help by supporting this petition.
