Teaching is one of the most rewarding and challenging careers in the world. Many people chose this career, as they want to make a positive difference to young peoples lives. However in order to gain entry to the profession. You need to hold a degree and a postgraduate certificate.  Before you enter the profession you are already likely to be burdened with many of thousands of pounds of debt. Depending on when you gained your qualifications, has a big impact on this. A typical teacher graduating in 2018 could be £27k in debt before even securing a job.

The UK has a shortage of teachers and many leave the profession within 5 years. This is a result of the amount of work expected by government, the lack of funding for all education sectors and the pay received which has not been inline with inflation.  On top of this, the majority of teachers are then having to give back a percentage of their salary each month to pay off crippling student loans. Is this fair when teachers are actually fulfilling a job, that the government struggles to recruit for?

I would like to take this petition to the Education Secretary and ask them to wipe the slate of all teachers student loans, after 5 years of service.  But I need your help. This can only be debated in parliament with at least 100,000 signatures.

Thank you
