Zita Dempsey started this petition to UK Parliament

For too long women’s clothes sizes have been unrealistically small and inconsistent, and the problem is only getting worse. Many young girls will grow up trying to fit into sizes that are not a fair representative of the size itself and that also vary between shops. This is undoubtedly having a negative impact on their self esteem, mental health and, in some cases, physical health.

Clothes sizes being unrealistically small and not extending beyond a size “16” or “18” in many shops also excludes many women, including women who are a real size 16 or 18.

The UK Parliament must legislate to provide mandatory measurements for UK women’s clothing sizes. This will ensure that all sizes in all shops throughout the UK are consistent and also represent the size they are supposed to be. It is important that women don’t feel pressurised to fit into a certain size of clothing, especially clothing that is unrealistically small. This legislation will improve the mental and physical health of many women across the UK.
