Make public, communal eating space and kitchens a legal requirement high-density housing.

A study has found that regularly eating meals alone is the biggest single factor for unhappiness, besides existing mental illness. When we design only commercial spaces for individualised food consumption and cooking spaces for the single person, we are designing unhappiness. We believe that designing free, open and public communal kitchens and social eating spaces where citizens can come and cook for each other and share food freely, should be a legal requirement for a housing development of any significant density.

The case is clear for the reintegration of social eating spaces into dense housing. Social eating is as old as humankind itself and their removal from our cities correlates to a breakdown in trust and community.
