Why this petition matters

Hello there

A little about ourselves - My name is Katie and my partner, Liam.

In December 2019 we moved home, we had settled perfectly and life felt almost complete, we felt something was missing from our lives. We had our lovely home and our three beautiful children. It hit home one day that something was missing from our lives, something as young children myself and Liam had always grown up with dogs, we were missing our very own furbaby we looked online at breeders but was very worried about funding puppy farms/ illicit breeders. Growing up my family had always adopted from kennels, that was our next step. We looked online at our local kennels and we all instantly fell in love with 6 year old Staffordshire bull terrier boy, Cody. That same day we called and met Cody alongside our children, we fell in love at first sight and decided there and then we were adopting this beautiful boy. We spoke with members of staff at the kennels and exchange of deposit was made. Our home checks were complete Cody was ours and came home January 2020. On the 17th Jan 21 a I made an online post of Cody, as I had done many times beforehand. When a member contacted me claiming I had her dog. I refused to conversation further. Recently a page online has come to our attention, previous owner is asking for support to return her dog, exploiting our names and areas to ‘look’ for us and pass information on.
the previous owner has contacted a fundraiser who challenges kennels that wrongly rehome pets and Dog wardens that don’t check chips when collecting. Kennels are vital to our loved ones if lost/stolen/abandoned. A life line for many animals. Cody’s previous owner claims to have ‘proof of ownership’ alongside microchip details. Unfortunately none of those have been given as evidence.
As Cody is a rescue we only have adoption papers and vet information given to us from the kennels. When Cody was taken in by dog warden he had been abandoned by previous owner due to personal reasons. Cody was scanned, chip contacts was contacted and address registered to his chip was sent a letter. There was no response, the kennels held Cody for a further 10 days. Majority of kennels hold dogs for 7 days before they then become classed as ‘council property’

unfortunately UK law currently states dogs are ‘possessions’ and Micro chips are NOT proof of ownership. This causes a lot of cases very similar to the one we are experiencing, as we legally adopted Cody from the kennels we have no “ownership paperwork” which then builds cases like ours. Previous owners find new keepers information and demands return of their pet. This leaves us with a very stressful, emotional, life changing heartbreaking situation. We have spent over a year with Cody in our lives, because we don’t have ‘proof of ownership’ due to adopting he could potentially be removed from us. A home he has adjusted too, a life of love and happily retired at almost 8 years old. The impact of uprooting Cody I can’t even bare to think

we need support in helping us. Cody’s law - Microchips to be proof of ownership.

Thank you for reading please share, any bit helps us in our fight... keep Cody home
