I am campaigning to make it compulsory for kids under 16 years old to wear a helmet when out playing in their bike or scooter.
Almost 50 weeks from his accident Ben's story is going to be shown on BBC Alba on Tuesday 9pm 27th June.
What a pivotal time of year to show it - just before the school holidays when the weather should be nice & lots of kids will be out on their bikes & scooters. That was what my son was doing last summer holidays and thanks to his helmet it will be my son again this summer holidays.
Ben's helmet saved his life - he had a fall which gave him such a bad concussion that at first doctors didn't think he had been wearing one. On hearing he had been their chilling words will remain with me for the rest of my days "if your son hadn't been wearing a helmet your son would have died"
Most kids don't like helmets - they aren't cool, they mess up their hair, their friends don't wear them so why should they?? Kids who do wear them are ridiculed or bullied by their peers for wearing their helmet.
Take the decision out their hands - no helmet no scooter/bike it's that simple.
Nothing is more precious than your child's life - don't risk losing it. Always make your child wear a helmet.
