Alexandra Lehmann started this petition to UK Parliament and

Driving lessons (test and practical) are prohibitively expensive for young people, especially of lower income. At a time when politicians talk about ‘levelling up’ surely the accessibility of driving lessons is of primal importance to offer the same opportunities to all young people. Having a driving licence is as, if not more, vital than having a university degree, to step on the employment ladder. How can an aspiring plumber, builder, musician, farm worker, or office worker apply for jobs if they don’t have the mobility to get there (especially considering how poor British public transport is)? Surely teaching road safety and driving theory in 6th form as part of the curriculum, with a free test for all students in Y13, would have a positive impact on ‘levelling  up’, as politicians like to say. It is not a luxury, but a necessity for young people to have driving lessons; as much as a solid foundation in English and maths.

Finally, the cost of cars and insurance are prohibitive. There ought to be a car loan, similar to the student loan system. Furthermore, if 16–19-year-olds have road safety/ driving theory lessons for their final two years; there may be fewer accidents and the price of insurance for young drivers could come down.

Therefore, I am petitioning for driving theory/road safety lessons to be a subject at college, and for the availability of car ownership loan for young people from lower income backgrounds.
