Lorry drivers must use Commercial Sat Navs

All lorry drivers who use satnavs should be compelled to use commercial models.

The nuisance and damaging effects of heavy lorries are a serious problem for many rural communities, and those who use and enjoy the countryside. Some large lorries are using small country lanes as rat runs or short cuts – causing considerable damage, noise, pollution and intimidation along the way. It only takes one lorry to thunder down a country lane or through a quiet village to unnerve a walker, cyclist or horse rider.

Making it mandatory for drivers of commercial vehicles to use commercial Sat Navs would go a long way towards reducing this traffic on our rural lanes. Lorry Sat Navs are like normal car Sat Navs, but they include bridge heights, narrow roads, and roads unsuitable for lorries. In addition, they allow the driver to enter the lorry's dimensions - height, width, weight and load – so they are only guided along suitable roads.
