Paris Hart started this petition to UK Parliament

As an adolescent, there is extremely limited support available for LGBTQ+ individuals, whether it be mental health support or sexual education. As a result, many of these LGBT youth grow up without sufficient knowledge to tackle problems such as hate crimes, intolerance, STDs, etc. Not everyone is lucky enough to have a supporting family or unconditional love and in these cases, schools, which often serve as second homes for children, should have the basic repsonsibility of providing that support.

Many of my LGBTQ+ peers resort to the internet for the support they cannot receive in real life, which can often lead to harm and antisocial behaviour. It results in adolescents turning to less reliable sources in an attempt to find solace. In 2017, in a survey launched by the UK government, at least 2 in 5 participants had experienced an incident in the 12 months before the survey, such as physical violence, because they were LGBT. However, more than 90% of the most serious incidents went unreported, often because participants thought ‘it happens all the time’.

Therefore, it is an imperative that LGBT support is available in schools, such as safeguarding officers and appropriate mental and physical health services. Moreover, members of staff must be supportive. Having an appropriate LGBT support service in schools will assure a safer environment for LGBT youth. Please help our children make it through adolescence by signing this petition calling upon our government to improve the LGBT support available in schools.

Thank you
