Pepper spray is a widely recognised non-lethal powerful deterrent that can be used for self-defence, therefore reducing the risks of assault.

However, the British government states that pepper spray is considered to be an offensive weapon, which makes it illegal for the British public to own and/or carry.

Pepper spray causes immediate closing of the eyes, difficulty breathing, runny nose, and coughing. The duration of its effects depends on the strength of the spray; the average full effect lasts from 20 to 90 minutes. Using pepper spray against an attacker can drastically increase the victim's chance of getting to safety without causing severe harm.

Currently, the most effective form of self-defence is to carry a rape alarm. Other than that, there is nothing of any reasonable effect that can be used for self-defence in the UK that wouldn't be classified by police as an offensive weapon.

This petition calls upon the British government to legalise the use of pepper spray for self-defence.
