Riding your own electric scooter isn't legal in the UK, however the government have made it legal to ride the ones that they rent you. This makes using them very hard as they are only available in limited locations and means that the constant charge  will negatively impact those who are of a lower economic background further preventing the possibility of an equal society. The government have committed to to reducing carbon emissions by 2050 and electric scooters could be a massive contributer to accomplishing that.

Unlike bikes they can go up to 15 miles an hour and keep up with most traffic in towns and cities, they are also electric and therefore better for the environment than cars or motorbikes. Additionally, because of their streamlined shape they are easier to pass than bikes are, preventing them from holding up traffic and allowing people to minimise conjestion. Moreover, they could be a more affordable alternative form of transportation, which would help people in getting and keeping jobs at further distances from their homes. This could prevent overcrowding on other forms of public transport (which encourages the spread of viruses such as Covid) making it a safer way to travel in the pandemic . This in turn would help boost the economy which has taken a significant hit in the past 2 years.

They're also more accessible for those with mobility issues who may not be able to ride a bike or  walk for a commute, because of health conditions but still want a sustainable way to travel. Additionally, because the controls for the scooter are done by hand this could be a great alternative for amputees or people with conditions such as MS, as they can be easily adapted for their use.
