Immediate review for UK passports only to be issued in the UK

As a UK citizen I believe our passports should be created here; in the country they are issued. In addition as a country preparing to leave the European Union there is a tension around our citizens ability to travel freely during the transition period and an uncertainty to do the same beyond that. Fundamentally all UK citizens believe in achieving the best value when possible for the British taxpayer. However, the decision to award the contract to create UK passports to a company based outside the UK is unacceptable.

The UK passport currently states “Her Britannic Majesty's Secretary of State Requests and requires in the Name of Her Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance, and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.” The current proposal recommends production of this document, which to many, represents our rights as citizens to a country where, ultimately our sovereign will have no jurisdiction

Given the heightened negotiations surrounding the UK removing itself from the European Union; there are several fundamental questions that must take higher priority in awarding contracts to non UK firms, specifically where sovereignty is concerned. Our passports must be produced and created within the isles as a constitutional matter. Furthermore, the proposed loss of jobs and investment is unacceptable. We the undersigned urge the government to review the tendering process to award this contract to a foreign supplier and request that it is reviewed and offered to UK suppliers only
