Freestyle Libre on Prescription

There are over 4 million people living with diabetes in the uk, with more than 24,000 dying before their time each year.
Over 80,000 bed days a year are taken up by diabetics at an estimated cost of £400 per day. In England 86.2% of inpatients with diabetes had been admitted as an emergency, compared to 80.7% of all patients in hospital. 9.1% of inpatients with diabetes, uncontrolled diabetes or a diabetic complication was the main reason for their admission to hospital.
21.8% of inpatients had one or more hypoglycaemic episodes (blood glucose measurement of 3.9 mmol/L or less). 20% of inpatients had one or more mild hypoglycaemic episodes (blood glucose measurement of 3.0 – 3.9 mmol/L). 9.8% of inpatients had one or more severe hypoglycaemic episodes (blood glucose measurement of less than 3.0 mmol/L). The Freestyle Libre continuous blood glucose meter could have prevented these hypoglycaemic episodes.
The Abbott FreeStyle Libre has come as an entirely new concept in glucose monitoring by providing much greater data than blood glucose testing whilst being more affordable than continuous glucose monitor. It has been in the UK since 2014, however it comes as at a cost of;
Starter Pack - reader plus two 14 day sensors: £159.95
FreeStyle Libre Reader: £57.95
FreeStyle Libre Sensor: £57.95 lasts 14 days
For some this cost is manageable but for many it is far from accessible. This campaign is to petition for this meter to be readily available on NHS prescription. The benefit of having this on prescription far out weighs the cost.
