Freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of thought, freedom of being.

Freedom is fundamental.

We are University of Nottingham's Student Advocacy Seminar working in collaboration with Scholars at Risk to #FreeIsmail, an Egyptian researcher and journalist who has been arbitrarily detained since November 29, 2015 for demonstrating his academic freedom of expression.

Ismail was arrested when returning to Egypt after attending a conference in Germany. Ismail reported on Islamist movements and developments in the Sinai Peninsula, he is facing several charges including the propagation of false news on the forced evictions and arbitrary targeting of civilians by the security forces in Sinai.

Ismail and his family were not told of his charges and his arrest warrant was not executed lawfully.

Ismail's unlaw imprisonment has been extended every time he has been reviewed. He has not been granted a trial and communication with Ismail is not possible; therefore, his condition in the prison is not known.

We call on the UK government to demonstrate their support for freedom of expression, thought and their opposition to violation of these rights. We call on Theresa May to question the Egyptian government's unlawful treatment of academics.

We call on you to #FREEISMAIL
