I am a father and have always paid for my children. During a period of ten years, when my daughters lived with me, I contacted the Child Maintenance Service on many occasions and received no maintenance at all from their mum, or help from  the CMS.

As soon as my daughters went to live with their mum, I was ordered to pay maintenance which I argued against for around a year, as their mum never once paid me. Please don't get me wrong, I was still providing for them and buying them whatever they needed. during this time, the CMS added missed payments and I am in arrears of around £4000.00.

They are now taking £500.00 a month directly from my wages which I cannot afford to pay. They refuse to listen and have actually lied about telephone conversations that I've had with them despite the calls being recorded. My partner went back to college to become an accountant, she has had to leave and go back to work as we cannot afford to live and are now in arrears with our rent and council tax.

There are fathers out there right now that have been made homeless by the CMS, that are living in their cars and that cannot see their children as they have no where to take them and cannot afford to do anything with them.

CMS should not have the power to make someone destitute, they certainly do not have the right to destroy my partners education. I am not speaking for the father who do not pay, I am speaking for those that do but cannot afford whats being asked of them. The CMS are unregulated and do what they like with peoples lives. They are not there to help full-time fathers as I found out, they disregard complaints, and they lie. They need to be answerable, there needs to be a clear complaints system and there needs to be a fair appeals process that is NOT in-house, but run by an independent party. Staff there need to be held accountable for their actions and not feel that they can do as they please because the CMS is untouchable.
