Universal Credit provides different standard welfare allowances based on circumstances. There are currently 4 different standard allowance catergories that a claimant falls under:

Single and under 25 - £251.77

Single and 25 or over - £317.82

In a couple and your both under 25 - £395.20 (for you both)

In a couple and either of you are over 25 -  £498.89 (for you both)

Whether you are single or in a couple, the deciding factor for the standard allowance you recieve is solely based on your age. Age is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 which makes it illegal and unlawful to discrimate based on this. To provide different amounts of money to a claimant based on a protected characteristic is therefore unlawful.

The cost of living is the same regardless of your age. Food, bills and rent for example (seen as priority bills) would be the same for every single claimant.

My goal is to ensure that all claimants, irrespective of age, recieve the same benefit entitlement appropriate to the cost of living including food, childcare and bills.
