End racial bias and discrimination in UK media coverage

End racial bias and discrimination in UK media coverage
Why this petition matters
The way that Meghan Markle has and continues to be portrayed by the some of the British media, is a clear example of the ongoing issue of systemic racism we face in the UK. Stories and discussions like we have seen, push the message of white supremacy. If there continues to be no consequence for this, it will not end.
I know I’m not the only person who has felt incredibly let down by some the coverage following the interview. Rather than addressing the issue, gaslighting and white fragility continues to prevail and Meghan has been called a liar, a bully and in it for the fame.
We have seen people sit on all white panels on prime time television slots, discussing whether or not they think something has been racist. We’ve seen people black and brown people try to speak their truth, only to be gaslighted and dismissed.
Systemic racism, white supremacy and the covert and overt racism that exists in the UK, remains an ongoing and current issue. The UK government need to protect all people from racially biased media coverage and set an example for future generations. We have a right to a fair and impartial press. We have a right to fair representation in stories that affect us.
I propose that there should be an independent media watchdog, that holds the press and media to account, when discriminatory or racially biased undertones are used in stories. Or when discussions are held on prime time television without fair representation.
Racism is not a debate.
It’s time to make a change.
