Know your rights. That is a lesson that I and many others will be learning the hard way. I was always under the belief that here in the UK worker rights were rock solid. That is far from the case. I am currently going through the redundancy process and am likely to lose my job in the near future. Given the situation I was forced to examine my finances and what my potential payout would be. I was surprised to lean it would be zero. Nothing. That is the payment.

The government changed the law (in 2018 I believe) introducing a 2 year minimum period for workers rights to qualify. This is a meaningless arbitrary number that heavily favors employers. As a result I cant even appeal the redundancy and my union spelt out that they could basically do nothing, I essentially have no way to take my employer to an employment tribunal.

There are other items in redundancy payments that just don't add up as well:

Notice In Lieu, all now taxable. Luckily for me my contract has a 3 month notice period, so I have some time to look at getting another job. Other people are not going to be as lucky. Even so, my final payments will all be taxed. Almost one third will go to the government even though I have no fall back once the three months are up. To put this in perspective it would be the equivalent of an extra month and a half's wages. Giving me nearly 5 months of full pay to find a job.

Ageism in the statutory payments. People under 22 only receive half a weeks pay for every year they have worked, while people over 45 get a week and a half. Given that the pay is salary based and a 45 year old will likely be on a higher wage than a 22 year old, I don't see why everyone does not simply receive a flat week for each year they have worked (even then a week is hardly generous).

I would like the government to change the laws so that employees have full workers rights at the end of their probation period or after 6 months, whichever comes first.

I would like the government to return 'Notice in Lieu' payments to tax exempt.

I would like statutory redundancy to be equal for all ages.

This wont come in time to benefit me, but there will be more redundancies in the future and I don't want anyone to have to have to find out the way I have. I realize this isn't as exciting as some highly polarized debate on the environment or Europe, but this is something that could affect all of you and you wont know until you fall into the trap. Sign my petition and restore your rights.
