Kimberley Thorpe started this petition to UK Parliament

I am a mature law student. I also have two children and a part time job. When i enrolled at university, I was assured by HMRC that my student finance payments would not be considered as income as they are for university nessecities and rental payments. I do not claim housing benefit (I use my maintenaince loan, as advised) however I do claim working and child tax credits. As mentioned, my maintenaince loan covers my rents, my small wage and tax credits covers my daily living costs, bills and nessecities for my children. I have now been informed that I need to make a change over to universal credits. Upon doing research, universal credits take student finance payments into consideration. This would leave me personally on a salary of around £12000 a year with my student finance and wage only, my university books total almost £500 per year. My rent is £875pcm and bills around £200. As you can calculate, the annual income does not even cover my rent and bills, let alone any resources for university or anything for my children. Student finance is a loan that's repayable with interest. The same as any mortgage or bank loan or even payday loan, these things are not taken into consideration by UC. I suggest that student finance payments are not taken into consideration by UC. I do believe rent should be paid out of maintaince loans so I think the quite simple solution would be, do not include maintenaince loans but do not give extra payments for housing. Please sign this petition to stop myself and 100,000 other mature students dropping out from bettering our lives for our children.
