I think most of us are getting fed up with packaging these days. It's not often we find ourselves actually appreciating all the stuff our products are covered in.

So with that in mind I'd like to propose some much needed and long overdue changes to our packaging.

Firstly, let's make it obvious whether the products we are buying are this, that, or the other. What I mean is whether it's vegan or vegetarian, gluten free, etc. I'm tired of reading through endless fine print just to see whether or not what I'm buying is suitable for my diet or what's recyclable or not! Why are we hiding these things?! I want a clear symbol on the front of anything that it's relevant for to state what it is or isn't. There needs to be universal symbols for the following: vegan; vegetarian; cruelty free; gluten free; recyclable; not vegetarian/vegan; cruel (there may even be more). Give me a big green V for vegetarian or a big red V with a slash through it if it's NOT vegetarian! On top of that, if you are so proud of your product then you should be proud of where it comes from or how it's made. So I wanna see exactly what products are cruelty free and if not you should have to tell everyone that what you are selling is not cruelty free. Tell us what it is you're doing because if you feel good enough to do it, then you should be happy enough to let everyone know. If you need to hide it, then clearly something is wrong and needs to change.

Secondly, following up on the recyclability of products, there are a few things that need to be addressed here. One is that anyone can display the green dot (the symbol with two revolving arrows in a circle) on their packaging if they have "made a financial contribution to the recovery and recycling of packaging in Europe." Although this isn't exactly bad, it also isn't clear that this is what it means. I've been caught out far too many times assuming that it meant something was recyclable. There are many other symbols like this and even some products that are recyclable and are displayed with a relevant symbol end up not being recycled due to rejection. This is another issue in and of itself! Why we still live in a day and age where packaging isn't recyclable is beyond me, but at least tell us clearly whether or not it actually is! Let's really make the push towards a greener planet!

So to clarify, let's stop using non-recyclable packaging entirely, but whilst we get there, tell us clearly what is and isn't recyclable! Tell us CLEARLY whether it's vegetarian or not! Vegan or not! Cruelty free or CRUEL! Why are we hiding it all?! Just be clear, direct, and coherent! Things need to change.
