Carole Gamble started this petition to General Medical Council and

If Dementia were to be classified as a terminal illness, which it is - it only ends when the sufferer dies - the struggles experienced, currently, by the patient and their carer(s) would be eliminated and the sufferer would receive the correct level of care required to keep them safe and as healthy as they can be. The costs would be met by NHS, as heart attack, stroke and cancer patients are now. People can, and do, recover from those problems but Dementia is incurable and no-one recovers from it.

My Mother suffered from vascular dementia, but there are many other forms, like Alzheimer’s for example. They all take a different form for each individual but there are many common areas and phases that the sufferer will go through - forgetfulness, paranoia, anxiety, depression, character change to name but a few.

As the illness progresses they are unable to do so many things for themselves and become more and more reliant on their primary carer.

Financial impact is immense on the family with care homes so expensive.

if Dementia was reclassified as terminal, the care costs would be met by NHS.

This would need much more investment from the Government to fund this but would have a positive impact for an ageing society.
