Deb C started this petition to UK Parliament and

My husband has incurable lung cancer. As there are so many treatments available now he could be with us for years, but when it comes to claiming the benefits he's entitled to in order to make his life more comfortable the DWP don't quite see it that way.

Our government defines a terminal illness as "when a person's death can be reasonably expected within 6 months". This has been in place for 30 years, despite the medical breakthroughs that have been made over the past 3 decades and the number of cases of those passing away within 6 months of diagnosis now being less than 10%.

The more realistic definition of a terminal illness is one that cannot be cured and will more than likely cause the death of the patient but this could be in weeks, months or years.

As it stands, if you are given the devastating news you have incurable cancer, for example, and claim Universal Credit or PIP it actually asks you is you have been given 6 months or less to live.

If you have, well, congratulations! Tick the box, sign the form and we'll fast track your claim. If you haven't been given this grim prognosis you have to spend hours of your precious time answering questions that have no relevance, wait weeks for a reply then be subjected to a humiliating interview with a complete stranger who is a "health professional" and awards you points on your limitations or capabilities.

This 6 month rule applies to ALL terminal illnesses, some of which are impossible to put into a possible lifespan timeframe. By changing this to 12 or even 18 months it will instantly do the following;

● Make the process so much more sympathetic to those who have just been given the devastating news their illness can't be cured

● Greatly shorten the waiting times for these interviews for those claimants whose illness or disability isn't life threatening
