We need to bring back the NHS bursary for student nurses. Doctors and dentists still have this luxury whilst studying, so why cant nurses or midwifery students? Registrations for student nurses are at a low and plummeting each year. Scotland has raised their bursary, meaning there is a need for it. Why have we abolished it? Students have to work 37.5 hours during their placement for a total of 19 weeks. To fund themselves most have other employment. Thus working a total of 6/7 days a week. Where is the quality of life? Why hasn't the hours needed to meet the NMC standards been lowered? To take away we must also give something back. The number of student nurses that leave within the first year is higher than average there is no incentive and no motivation by the end of their final placement in the first year. They are treated as to quote as surplus and are expected to work beyond their remit. Student nurses and midwives should be in receipt of a bursary as they work long hours and have longer term times as any other student in study.
