Stop landlords from refusing to rent to couples with children

Me and my partner have been trying to move house for months; we currently live in a flat riddled with mould that is causing our 10 month old son breathing problems. However, every time we find a place and call the letting agent/private landlord, we are told that the landlord "doesn't want children in their property".

Despite its archaism, to refuse renting to someone on the basis they have a child/children is still legal in the UK - something that has been illegal in the US since 1988.

UK law currently protects you against landlords refusing to rent to you based on: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership (in employment only), pregnancy and maternity, race, religion/beliefs, sex and sexual orientation. The US protects these characteristics as well as children, so why doesn't the UK?

This is outdated and we feel its time the UK changed the law to include 'children' in their protected characteristics, meaning(amongst other things) that you cannot refuse to rent your property to someone because they have a child or children.

Please sign our petition in light of parliament preventing landlords from discriminating against single parents / couples with a child/children. This is particularly prevalent in lettings where the property is a 1 bedroom flat, as this is what most single parents/couples with a child can afford, and is the largest area in which this discrimination is taking place.
