atypical anorexia is the diagnosis given to anorexia sufferers that aren’t at a significantly low body weight.

anorexia is a MENTAL illness. weight loss is one of the many physical side affects anorexia can cause. the diagnostic criteria for a mental illness should not be based on the presence of physical side affects. it is a fatphobic diagnosis that proves how weight biased our health care systems are, and how uneducated our medical professionals are. it fuels the idea that you have to be underweight to have anorexia, and it means people are being are being denied treatment for a life threatening illness due to their weight.

anorexia is an EATING disorder, not a weight disorder. you can die from anorexia at any weight. it fuels the sufferers thoughts of not being “ill enough” and can cause their anorexia to spiral even further.

within the space of a week, the same doctor that had told me my weight was “too high” to get help, was ringing for an ambulance because my heart was failing. YOU CANT DETERMINE SOMEONES HEALTH BY WHAT THEY WEIGH. if my mum hadn’t fought tooth and nail, i would be dead.

because they’re not getting the help they need, every day, people are losing their lives due “atypical” anorexia. it is a disgusting, fat phobic diagnosis that needs to be banned.
