Jodie Hemming started this petition to UK Parliament and

The current framework for how the Child Maintenance Service works out payments to the Resident parent takes only three factors into consideration, Pension payments, how many other children are already being paid for under child maintenance by the paying parent, and shared care. – How many nights a child stays with the parent. While these are of fairness, there are factors that aren’t being taken into consideration leaving many paying fathers and mothers unable to provide themselves, and their families with their basic needs due to the amount needing to be set aside BEFORE paying for bills, food and other essential needs.
It is incredibly shocking to see and know that any other expenditure form takes many, many factors into consideration so that a person can meet themselves and their families basic needs, and not be left in a poor financial situation, except for fathers, and mothers, paying child maintenance.

While it is respected that the child maintenance service does work to protect children to ensure they have what they need, there are still some large loopholes in the system that can be addressed to make co-parenting a better experience for all.

The following factors are what I, and many other parents I know, not only would like, but NEED to see these taken into consideration include –
- Weekly food bill of paying person, or family on a low household income
- Rent or mortgage of the paying parent named on the paperwork, and council tax bills of working paying parent
- Weekly or monthly prescription charges for paying parent, or children in the household that rely on a low household income
- Weekly travel costs to school and work for paying parent, and other children in the household on a low income
- Children that are living in the same household as paying parent, that are not already receiving child maintenance for
- Tax payments of self-employed, and low income household
- Toiletries, clothing and footwear per month of a low income household

In relation to the very last factor, it is important to note, as quoted from the Money Advice Service that “with such costs as food, toiletries, clothing and footwear, you’re entitled to a minimum amount no matter what”. However child maintenance do not take that statement into consideration for both adults and children of the non resident household. Currently the above factors are seen as a “lifestyle choice”, however much of these are basic needs of any human, therefore it is important to have this recognised.

This proposal, I hope will gain the support from all of those affected by the current system, and more, to ensure fairness all round for our UK families. This proposal is not to bring the costs right down to a minimum, it is purely and genuinely to bring holistic fairness and affordability, while ensuring the needs of EVERYONE are met. I'd like to thank you for your time taken to read this, if it relates to yourself, or someone you know, please share and support. It might just help them more than they could ever let you know!

My name is Jodie, above all, i am a mother of two. I am also a law student who is on a journey to make changes that will hold better effects on as many people as possible. I'd like to start with the things that are close to my heart and hope to reach as many people as possible in doing so.
